Parent Driven Recovery: Self-destructive behaviors in the home
Chacha Sands, RSPS, CCTP, CAGCS and Joe Parker, LCDC, CCTP
Our team specializes in adolescent and young adult substance use disorders and other self-destructive behaviors associated with substance use. We know that any untreated conditions inhibit potential. ADHD has a considerable impact on impulsivity which can result in an increase of self-destructive behavior. Other conditions that affect metal health and well-being have similar effects and our approach remains the same: an emphasis on a positive peer group, healthy habits and routine, parent driven recovery and remaining united as a treatment team. We believe in out of the box counseling that provides clients with direction, hope and tools to sustain long-term recovery. Our approach is to work in tandem with other professionals (psychologists, psychiatrist, PCPs, etc.) to support a holistic treatment plan. Our focus is on creating an environment of positive and healthy families by developing parent driven recovery and self-esteem, honesty, accountability and integrity within the teen.
Participants will be able to:
1. understand how high-risk behavior such as alcohol, drugs, vaping and risky behavior such as technology overuse, gambling, and pornography affect youth brain development.
2. discuss the arrest of neurodevelopmental processes and executive function skills affect youth as they age.
3. review Brain-based Prevention and treatment techniques based on prevention science and stage of change theory to address youth high-risk behavior.
4. apply prevention science techniques consistently within families and schools to achieve long-lasting protective effects.
Participants will be able to:
1. understand the concept of Parent Driven Recovery and why it is effective.
2. identify why a positive peer group is essential to adolescent recovery.
3. review how the combination of PDR, a positive peer group and principle-based recovery increases odds of success.
