ADHD & Driving: A Guide for Parents of Teens with AD/HDBy J. Marlene Snyder, Ph.D. Reviewed by Eileen Bailey, ADD Guide Teaching your child to drive can be a scary experience. We all know that teenage drivers have more accidents and receive more tickets. We all worry each time our inexperienced driver is behind the wheel. But how does ADD/ADHD affect driving? According to several studies, teenagers with ADD/ADHD receive more tickets and have more accidents than their counterparts without ADD/ADHD. Taking a driver’s education course is certainly a good beginning, but research indicates that it is not the lack of knowledge that causes accidents. Of children questioned, those that had been involved in accidents had just as much knowledge of rules of the road than those who had not been in accidents. So how do you teach good driving habits to a teen that has trouble paying attention or focusing or becomes distracted easily? Dr. J. Marlene Snyder has created an outline for parents to follow in her book “AD/HD & Driving: A Guide for Parents of Teens with AD/HD”. She provides information and statistics to share with your child before you even get on the road. Throughout the book are ideas for parent and teen activities to help both of you feel confident in your child’s ability to drive. For example, one activity provides a website for measuring aggressiveness on the road. When both parent and teen complete the activity, you may both learn not only about yourself but may learn more about each other. In addition, Dr. Snyder has samples of driving contracts, checklists for driving lessons and takes you through the process little by little. She has thought of many different scenarios to help cover many situations that may come up. For any parent of a teen who is just learning to drive, or for those with teens who have already received their license, this book provides practical advice, tons of information and guidelines to follow from before your permit until after your license. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a teen, whether they are driving or just beginning to think about driving.
