Conference Highlights

Featured speaker, Jefferson Prince, M.D., is an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Director of Child Psychiatry for North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Massachusetts, and a Staff Member at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in the Child Psychiatry and Pediatric Psychopharmacology Clinics. He is involved in research into the characterization and treatment of AD/HD across the lifespan. Dr. Prince is the recipient of many awards and honors including the distinction of Laughlin Fellow for the American College of Psychiatrists. He has presented nationally and internationally and has authored/ co-authored numerous articles, abstracts and book chapters.

Chris Zeigler Dendy, nationally recognized author of Teenagers with ADD & ADHD (2nd edition), Teaching Teens with ADD and ADHD and A Bird’s-Eye View of Life with ADD and ADHD: Advice from Young Survivors, will present sessions on academic modifications and talk about parenting teens. Her co-author and son, Alex, will show clips from their new DVD for children and teens, Real Life AD/HD!

Three sessions, marked on the schedule with ***, meet the requirements of Ethics/Professional Responsibilities.

Jim “Mattress Mac” McIngvale will entertain us at the Friday night dinner. Join us for good food, entertainment and an auction as we celebrate our 20th anniversary.

General Information


Target Audience

This conference is designed for Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Psychologists, Nurses, Diagnosticians, Social Workers, LPCs, LMFTs, Educators, Parents of Children, Adults with AD/HD and others interested in AD/HD.

 

Concept and Methods

Attention Deficit Disorders (AD/HD) are widespread; little understood disorders which impact the lives of many individuals and those around them. Though children with AD/HD can learn compensating skills as they grow up, many frequently continue to experience symptoms as adults. Continuing education is needed for those who treat AD/HD as well as for those who are diagnosed.

A general session will be conducted on Friday and Saturday.

Concurrent sessions will follow throughout Friday and Saturday presenting additional topics. Positive traits of those with AD/HD which can lead to success and fulfillment will be explored. Content will be delivered by: lectures, handouts, visual presentations, question and answer sessions and case studies.

This conference is designed to define diagnostic criteria, review evaluation tools, provide current pharmacological information, address comorbid conditions, teach behavior management techniques for home and classroom, present effective teaching techniques, train parents to advocate, teach coping and compensating skills to adults and promote a positive attitude regarding this disorder.

In accordance with the tenets of TMA and TNA, participants in continuing education activities should be made aware of any affiliation or financial interest that may affect the speaker’s presentation. Each speaker has been requested to complete a disclosure statement outlining off-label or unapproved uses of products, services or affiliations with commercial supporters. (TMA) through the joint sponsorship of Cook Children’s Medical Center and the Attention Deficit Disorders Association – Southern Region (ADDA-SR).

 CME

Cook Children’s Medical Center is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Cook Children’s Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Note to Psychologists: Participants may submit a copy of the signed self-reporting certificate to the Board of Examiners for the State of Texas for Psychologists for continuing education hours. Questions may be addressed at Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

 Ethics

This presentation has been designated by Cook Children’s Medical Center for 3.75 hours of ethics/professional responsibility.

Social Work

ADDA-SR is approved as a provider of continuing education for Social Workers by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners (Provider #CS2460). This activity is designated for a maximum of 10 credit hours.

 

CPE Credits for Educators

ADDA-SR is approved as a CPE provider of continuing education by the State Board for Educator Certification in Texas through TEA (Provider #501068). This activity is designated for a maximum of 10 CPE credits.

LPC, and LMFT

Cook Children’s Medical Center is approved as a provider of continuing education for Licensed Professional Counselor’s by the LPC Board of Examiners for the State of Texas (Provider #222) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists by the LMFT Board of Examiners for the State of Texas. These approvals meet the criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements towards relicensure as established by the individual Boards of Examiners for the State of Texas. CCMC designates this activity for a maximum of 10 contact hours CEU.

CNE

Cook Children’s Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity meets Type 1 criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements toward relicensure as established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. This activity is awarded 10.50 contact hours. Participants must attend the activity in its entirety, complete and return the evaluation tool.

Registration and Meal Information

Registration fee includes program, continental breakfast and break refreshments. Lunch is not included. The hotel restaurant, Basil’s Kitchen, offers affordable and fast service. A buffet will also be available Friday.

Friday Night Dinner

Take this special opportunity to visit old friends, make new ones, meet the speakers and share ideas. Join us as we mix and mingle over dinner and celebrate our 20th anniversary. You do not need to attend the conference in order to purchase a dinner ticket.

Dress

A light jacket or sweater may be desired in some meeting rooms.

The annual members meeting will be held Thursday, February 14th, at 5:00 PM. Call the ADDA-SR office if you plan to attend.        

Cancellations

No refunds will be given after February 8, 2008. Prior to this date, a cancellation fee of $25 will be charged, and refunds will be sent after the conference.

Discounts are available for teacher groups. Please check for the educator's discount.

Stipends 
All stipends  for hotel  and registration have been given.
A grant is being jointly provided by ADDA-SR and Texas Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities. This will provide consumer stipends to cover registration fees and limited lodging to individuals with AD/HD and their families who qualify under the Developmental Disabilities Act. Contact the ADDA-SR office or go to the stipend webpage for further information.

If you are newly diagnosed or just learning about AD/HD we suggest you attend the pre-conference Friday session, The ABC’s of AD/HD. The basics will be addressed and will offer a foundation for the other sessions.
