This conference is being offered to educate adults, parents, educators, health care professionals,  addiction professionals,  and the general public about Attention Deficit Disorders and Coexisting Conditions.  This widespread, little understood disorder impacts the lives of many individuals, both children and adults, and those around them. Continuing education is needed for those who treat ADHD as well as for those who are diagnosed.

Conference Highlights

  • Featured speaker, Paul Hammerness, M.D., is Scientific Coordinator of Pediatric Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD) Research in the Clinical and Research Program in Pediatric Psychopharmacology and Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hammerness completed his Adult Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the combined program of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)-McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He has been involved in clinical research trials over the past 14 years, beginning with work in adult mood and anxiety disorders in the Adult Psychiatry Department of MGH. Dr. Hammerness is involved in the development of future areas of ADHD study including pediatric ADHD, neuroimaging protocols, genetic analysis and cognitive behavioral therapy for adolescents with ADHD.  He serves on the MGH Institutional Review Board, reviewing new and ongoing research protocols for the MGH medical community.
     

  • Chris Zeigler Dendy, nationally recognized author of Teenagers with ADD , Teaching Teens with ADD and ADHD and A Bird’s-Eye View of Life with ADD and ADHD: Advice from Young Survivors, will present sessions on academic modifications, parenting teens and moderate a panel of fathers in Fathers Know Best.
     

  • Three sessions,  marked on the schedule with ***, meet the requirements of Ethics/Professional Responsibilities.
     

  • There is a special session for school nurses.

General Information


Target Audience

This conference is designed for Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Psychologists, Nurses, Diagnosticians, Social Workers, LPCs, LMFTs, Educators, Speech Pathologists, Audiologists, Parents of Children and Adults with ADD/ADHD and others interested in ADD/ADHD.

 

Concept and Methods

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD) is a widespread, little understood disorder which impacts the lives of many individuals and those around them.  Though children with ADHD can learn compensating skills as they grow up, many frequently continue to experience symptoms as adults.  Continuing education is needed for those who treat ADHD as well as for those who are diagnosed. 

A general session will be conducted on Friday and Saturday.  Concurrent sessions will follow throughout Friday and Saturday presenting additional topics.  Positive traits of those with ADHD which can lead to success and fulfillment will be explored.  Content will be delivered by:  lectures, hand­outs, visual presentations, question and answer sessions and case studies and a panel.

This conference is designed to define diagnostic criteria, review evaluation tools, provide current pharmacological information, address comorbid conditions, teach behavior management techniques for home and classroom, present effective teaching techniques, train parents to advocate, teach coping and compensating skills to adults and promote a positive attitude regarding this disorder

Disclosure

In accordance with the tenets of TMA and TNA, participants in continuing education activities should be made aware of any affiliation or financial interest that may affect the speaker’s presentation.  Each speaker has been requested to complete a disclosure statement outlining off-label or unapproved uses of products or services or affiliations with commercial supporters.  The accredited provider has a mechanism in place to identify and resolve conflicts of interest. Disclosures will be listed in the  conference  program book.

Cook Children’s Medical Center is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Cook Children’s Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Note to Psychologists: Participants may submit a copy of the signed self-reporting certificate to the Board of Examiners for the State of Texas for Psychologists for continuing education hours. Questions may be addressed at www.tsbep.state.tx.us

 Ethics

This presentation has been designated by Cook Children’s Medical Center for 3.75 hours of ethics/professional responsibility.

Social Work

ADDA-SR is approved as a provider of continuing education for Social Workers by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners (Provider #CS2460). This activity is designated for a maximum of  10 credit hours .

 

CPE Credits for Educators

ADDA-SR is approved as a CPE provider of continuing education by the State Board for Educator Certification in Texas through TEA (Provider#501068). This activity is designated for a maximum of 10 CPE credits.

LPC, and LMFT

Cook Children’s Medical Center is approved as a provider of continuing education for Licensed Professional Counselor’s by the LPC Board of Examiners for the State of Texas (Provider #1937) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists by the LMFT Board of Examiners for the State of Texas.  These approvals meet the criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements towards relicensure as established by the individual Boards of Examiners for the State of Texas. CCMC designates this activity for a maximum of 10 contact hours  CEU.

CNE

Cook Children's Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity meets Type 1 criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements toward relicensure as established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. This activity is awarded 10.50 contact hours.  Participants must attend the activity in its entirety, complete and return the evaluation tool.

TSHA

This program has been approved for 10 (5 per day) clock hours of continuing education credit for TSHA for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists. TSHA does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products or clinical procedures.

The Sheraton Grand at DFW, 4400 West John Carpenter Freeway, Irving, TX 75063, 972-929-8400.  Mention ADDA-SR to get a group rate of $99.00 plus tax for single or double room if reserved by no later than 5 PM on January 18, 2007. A shuttle service is available from DFW Airport

Registration and Meal Information

Registration fee includes program, continental breakfast and break refreshments. Lunch is not included. The hotel restaurant, Ashley’s, offers affordable and fast service. Menu as well as  a buffet is available Friday and Saturday.
 

Friday Night Dinner

Stipends 
 All stipends have been given. 

A grant is being jointly provided by ADDA-SR and Texas Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities. This   will provide consumer stipends to cover registration fees and limited lodging to individuals with ADHD and their families who qualify under the Developmental Disabilities Act.  Please contact the ADDA-SR office or click here for further information.
