Advocacy Notebook Keeping Organized

In order for parents to keep on top of what happens with their children, they must keep good records. The following article is a simple way to keep records.

First, purchase a 2" or 3" (three-ring) notebook. You will eventually need the space.
Place dividers in notebook and set it up in a way in which you feel comfortable. Here are some suggestions:

Anytime you correspond with the school and/or teacher, do it in writing and keep a copy for yourself. There are several reasons for keeping a notebook. First, teachers are very busy. Most teachers listen to what you say, but do not always remember. With a written note to reinforce what you told them, they generally recall the note and follow through. Remember your child's teacher has 20 or more students and may not always be able to recall what parents have told her. Give a gentle reminder and the teacher will appreciate it. Second, you will have a copy for your records in case his/her copy should be misplaced. Teachers are human. We must do our best to cooperate with each other to have a successful school year. Parents want and need their teacher's help. Be willing to help them as well. Both parties must share the responsibility. Do not expect the teacher to do it all! Place all correspondence in your notebook.
Keep a phone log of information between you and your teacher. Jot down time, date, who called, and purpose of the call.

Keeping your records organized will lead to success and set an excellent example for your child.
